I had one of the worst automotive service experiences at Valvoline Instant Oil Change. What started as a routine visit turned into a nightmare due to negligence and poor customer service.
A new technician performed a light test on my vehicle’s headlights telling me to turn them on and forgot to tell me to turn them off, causing a hard drain on the battery. When I went to start the car, the battery was dead. They jumped it, but ever since, my car has had trouble starting and holding a charge issues that never existed before.
We brought the vehicle back and asked them to run diagnostics. They claimed everything looked fine, but the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) were flagged red, clearly indicating battery stress. Despite this, they dismissed our concerns and insisted the battery was fine.
Then came the runaround we were passed between multiple employees, each offering conflicting advice. Eventually, they told us to go have the alternator checked at a local mechanic, even though they had already tested it and confirmed it was green.
I regularly check my vehicle’s battery with a multimeter. Before this incident, it consistently read 12.6V or slightly higher when off, and 14.3V to 14.8V when running. After the hard drain, it dropped to 11.1V and even 10.9V when off, showing clear signs of damage and inability to hold a charge.
We opened a ticket to have the issue investigated, only to have the on-site manager close it out falsely claiming I had left my lights on a blatant lie. Their technician failed to follow basic procedures, and instead of owning the mistake, they deflected blame.
To top it off, they claimed a battery cannot be damaged by being hard drained for 20 minutes, which is completely false and shows a lack of basic automotive knowledge. A hard drain can cause sulfation, permanently reducing a battery’s ability to hold a charge. The longer a battery remains in a deep discharge state, the worse the damage becomes.
I continued to get the run around and told to go to a mechanic to have alternator tested after they had already tested it and said it was good. Then said if it cost to have it tested, we may not reimburse you for that expense. We decided to take the higher road and not be stressed any more and just by a battery which isn’t an issue. It’s due process of Valvoline and not once sorry for your experience and what has happened.
Valvoline’s customer service has been abysmal—dishonest, dismissive, and completely unhelpful. I trusted them with my vehicle, and they failed me at every step. I will never return, and I strongly advise others to stay far away.
