I am truly disappointed in my experiences with the Value City in Joliet, IL. We went into the store back in February looking for new couches for our living room. We ended up finding a sectional and a recliner we liked, and it just so happened to be on sale, so win-win, right? We were helped by Elyse, who came across as very friendly, trustworthy, and knowledgeable - or so we thought. Here are some of the issues we encountered. I originally wasn’t going to write a review, but I wanted others to be warned.
1. Sectional (floor model) – When we bought the sectional, it was the last one, so we were taking the floor model. We were told it would be wrapped up either that same day or the following morning. A few days later, my parents went in because they too were looking for new couches, and they noticed the sectional we purchased (and were promised would be wrapped) was still on the floor. Not a huge deal, but definitely annoying.
2. Pickup/delivery issue – When we agreed to pick up the sectional, Elyse mentioned we could wait until the recliner (which had to be ordered) came in. That way, we could pick them both up at once and avoid the $200 delivery fee or needing to make two trips, to which we agreed. Then we got a call from Elyse saying they could no longer hold the sectional until the recliner arrived because she hadn’t gotten approval from her manager and they needed space in the warehouse. I reminded her we didn’t really need the recliner, it was just a nice-to-have and if it meant paying $200 for delivery or making two trips, we’d rather cancel it and just pick up the sectional. Once they heard we wouldn’t be buying the recliner under those terms, suddenly it was “ok” to hold the sectional until the recliner arrived. Another annoyance - why call us with a problem, only to backtrack when you realize it might cost you the sale?
3. Financing problem – We went with their financing because it had 12 months of interest-free payments. Not that we needed the full year, but it was nice. Elyse, without being asked, put in 24 months “just to see if it would go through.” We NEVER requested this. When the first bill came from the credit card company, I noticed a little over $100 was charged as a “promotional fee.” No one had mentioned this, and it was charged without my authorization. I disputed it twice with the bank, but was told I signed the receipt agreeing and acknowledging it. I was shocked, if I had known about the fee, I never would have done their financing, since we didn’t even need it, so why would I pay extra money if I didn't need to.
I called Value City to clarify and asked if the fee applied to both 12 and 24 month financing. I was told it only applied to the 24 months. That’s where I got even more frustrated - because again, we never asked for the 24 months. Elyse apologized and told me I’d have to go through the bank for a refund. I explained I already tried and was redirected back to them. She spoke with her manager and called me back, offering $100 off a future $2,000 purchase if I came into the store. At the time, I was very pregnant and not going anywhere, but more importantly, why should I have to spend another $2,000 just to fix something their salesperson did without my consent? I told her I didn’t need new furniture right now and that I was due any day. She spoke with her manager again and said whenever we’re ready to buy, to ask for him and he’d “take care of us.” I asked what that meant and requested it in writing because all trust was broken at this point. She said she’d check with her manager and get back to me. Well, it’s going on two months and I never heard back nor received anything in writing.
I will never shop at this location again. They are not trustworthy. I understand I should never blindly trust salespeople and should have read the very small fine print on the receipt, but this isn’t about $100, it’s about the principle. Their salesperson made changes we didn’t ask for, and they failed to take accountability or make it right. I just wanted to warn people before shopping here.
