If I could give this company less than one star, or possibly take away a couple of the obviously fake 5 star ratings on Google, I would.
Long story short: I needed a 12” chipper – one of those machines that grinds up tree limbs that is towed behind a pickup truck. Ahern had one but would not reserve it until I drove down to their office and paid $952.75, a week ahead of time.
Since I needed it for the next Tuesday, I called on Monday to make sure the machine was going to be available. My landscape contractor also called, and we were assured it would be ready Tuesday morning.
Well, I got there, along with my contractor’s 4 man crew at 6 am, and were told the machine was not returned, and would I like a full refund. I told them no, as I had a 4 man crew waiting for the machine, to work it all day. We waited for an hour, as Ahern could not get in contact with the previous renter until 7am, at which time we found out the machine was in Santa Fe.
Ahern told us they would get the machine back from Santa Fe, perform a full service on it, and bring it out to our job site in the East Mountains. At 12 noon, they showed up with the machine, but it ran for only 1 hour, until it overheated and stopped running.
My contractor returned it on Wednesday morning, and Ahern told him they would charge me for a half day rental. I called up to confirm the charge on Wednesday morning, and I objected to the half day charge, at which point the rental manager got on the phone and told me they really went out of their way to get the machine to me, and they deserved to get paid.
When I pointed out that the entire situation was due to their mis-management and not delivering the goods, he told me he would process a full refund, but I could never rent from them again. That’s fine, as I never intended to rent from them again.
For those of you intending to rent from Ahern, expect to be “served” by lazy rental agents, who have no concept of whatever costs, or time off, or other factors you go through, to be able to utilize a piece of rental equipment to get done what you have to get done.
After all their screw-ups, the proper response would have been a call to me by the manager to apologize for wasting so much of my time and money, no-charging of the defective chipper, and a free half day rental for something in the future. That might have conserved my business for the future. Instead, the manger acted like a victim, and banished me from renting from them in the future.
