we want to clarify first that we didn't have Townsend finish preparing our tax filing so we can't speak to the final tax filing work quality; and this is not a review towards Kyle Blackburn, we didn't directly work with him but from all our email communications he is very courteous and professional.
the reason we're giving a bad review is because that we felt like the service quality and intake process we've had was no difference and probably worse than us just filing on with TurboTax at our home, instead of paying $100/hour for "consultation", when literally was just information gathering and intake. for background information, we're a newly wed couple so first year filing taxes together we are a bit overwhelmed with the fling options (jointly or separately) and deductions wise we were never very clear on what is so different between standardized vs itemized, which I'm sure a lot of people feel the same so we always had Turbotax decide for us when filing as single, but this time we want to take it seriously therefore consulting actual professionals. however we are very disappointed to find out that, first off, there is no clear pricing, not on the website, not in the office, we had to ask when we were about to leave what is our payment, and our tax filer Carol did a manual calculation on a piece of paper, and told us pricing is based on how many forms are filed, which is fine, but this is not discussed or informed before, between or even after we are ready to go. and after emailing with Kyle after we came back home, we found out that the 2 hours we sit there with Carol technically is also part of consultation, which is charged $100/hour, so we need to pay $200 just watching Carol type in our tax forms, during which there was very minimum consult exchanges during the 2 hour, except for an expense schedule I forgot to bring. This brings to my second point where we felt like the service quality is not great, Carol didn't ask us a lot of questions, comparing to Turbotax, we are bombarded with questions, such as do you go to school, so maybe you have a T1098 that you need to file, do you have any brokerage account so you might have long/short term capital gains/losses you need to file. and maybe we were just expecting too much, but we told Carol that we were newly wed so we are not sure about choosing between filing options, and in the end, we were just told about amount of taxes owed, if there is any other implications if we choose to file separately vs together, I think a tax professional would've known, and maybe educate us a bit, if that's not an option, maybe we just expected too much and should've stayed at home and google everything and use Turbox tax. For the third reason we're not very happy, is that we don't think the whole experience was very professional with Carol, my husband had multiple W-2 forms as he hopped between jobs a bit in one year, it really isn't anyone else's business to question why he did, but Carol came off as a bit judgemental, asking him if we still had any of those jobs, and if he was just choosing between the benefits they offered, and she told the story that her husband (or some relative) had the same job for 35 years and eventually got laid off, sad story, we can sympathize, but comparing that to what my husband was doing, that is judgemental, especially when we were seeking for a professional business, on the door of the office it says it was BBB credited in 2018, and we checked online it is not anymore, so misleading much?
anyways, we didn't end up fling with them, because the whole exchange made us question about their work quality as well, which is not fair because we didn't finish filing with them, and with all the good reviews on google, maybe we might just had a one off bad experience, so please consider our review carefully, and I think Kyle Blackburn did a great job being professional and clear about everything over the email, so take this review as advisement only if you want to work with them.
