Background:
We received a free, one-year membership to Thousand Trails when we bought our camper. We planned on spending Fourth of July weekend at the Chesapeake Bay location in Virginia with my parents, who bought a membership the day we activated our free membership. We knew the sites were first come, first serve. When we made the reservation, we both put in the comments section to be placed near each other if possible. This was our first time at any Thousand Trails campground and it was going to be the deciding factor on extending our membership through a promotion they are running.
Customer Service:
* I called the number to activate the membership and the man was very helpful and courteous. That’s about where good customer service stopped. I called the campground to see if any spots were available and ask some other questions, and my call was put in a queue where I would be called back in about an hour. I never received a call back. When my parents were trying to join and reserve a spot, they were met with rudeness or no returned calls at all.
Campground Positives:
* Several fun activities were planned for the holiday weekend, such as games, pickleball tournaments, movie night, several craft sessions, DJ and dancing, face painting, water balloon battle, bingo, wiffleball, walking club, popsicles, and snow cones.
* The cafe has a good variety of things to eat on their menu. The chicken salad croissant sandwich was very good.
* People seemed to abide by the quiet hours, which was surprising for the 4th of July.
* Pools were decent.
* Bathhouse that we used was updated and clean.
Campground Negatives:
* My parents got to the campground at about 1:30pm and got a spot with a great view of the river. They said there were several spots open near them. They asked if they could reserve one of the spots for us since we’d be there soon. The campground said no. We got to the campground just before 3:00pm and upon checking in, I asked if we could be near my parents who were already there. The man said he couldn’t make any promises. He came back out with my spot info, which was clear across the campground from my parents. I asked if it would be possible to get a closer spot to them and that there were several spots open over there. He said no we can’t do that, because it’s a busy weekend and those spots are probably already assigned to people. He never even asked for the number of the spot they were in to check. So much for first come, first serve.
* The spot we were given had a huge hole right where the camper needed to be parked to hook up, so we had to park pretty far over.
* It seems like rudeness is a requirement to work there. The front gate staff were rude and snippy. The cafe staff were not friendly and because they were backed up, they yelled at the next people ordering that they had to shut down ordering. We went to get ice cream at the store at about 7:30pm. While we were inside, my uncle came up there about 5 minutes after us and they had locked the door. They close at 8pm. When the lady answered, she said they were closing, he said the sign says they’re open until 8 and she said, “well, we’ve been here since 9:30 this morning and we’re tired.” She ended up letting them in, but kept making snide comments like, “I’m irritated, too” and “I shouldn’t’ve answered at all.”
* Check-in gate/office is extremely disorganized and slow.
* Pool and spa bathrooms were dirty and smelled.
