What a sad turn in quality and service in what used to be my favorite place in KC -- no more Corner Candleshop for me after being a loyal customer since it opened! Since it was first opened under the 5B name, I've spent hundreds of dollars every year at this store (even during stints when I lived out of state), and the scents continue to be lovely. The last two years, my favorite candle tins started exhibiting consistent wick and burning problems even though I had been burning them the same way, using the owner's recommended tips for years. I started having problems with the votives, also, so I moved to only buying the tea lights.
On top of the quality issues, the service has become increasingly poor. Today, I offered to pay to receive less product than what is typically included into their candle tubes (3 tea lights instead of 3 votives) because I wanted to then purchase additional tea lights to fill up the tube and get more of the type of candle I actually want onto my plane (see above for the quality issues with the other products). I repeated myself twice: I am flying out in two days and do not want to carry around extra votives nor am I going out to give candles to friends on my short stay back here. I really just wanted the tube as a container, and I wasn't even allowed to just pay for that -- even though I said I would pay full price without the candles that are typically included! It didn't even make business sense and was so silly that I finally left.
I would have considered reaching out to the owner, but really, why bother with folks who don't bother themselves? During the different times when I lived in KC, including as recently as this last winter, there have been stretches where I came into this store every week to get a few candles as a little pick me up, and no one ever bothered to spend half a second to recognize the customers enough to stop asking if I've ever been to the store. Then, when I responded that I was a loyal customer, the staff were not trained well enough to know to stop listing off all the specials to someone who says they've been a loyal customer for years. (Again, I already know all the specials because I've been on their email and social media mailing lists for years.) Sheesh.
