Bought in on a sought after breed and lucked up on a yellow female lab. Didn’t hunt her the first year and tried trainer her myself, didn’t work out how I wanted and she became severely gun shy so immediately took her to a different trainer I had heard from that was different from Easton’s Smokin feathers. She was there 8-9 months and the guy did a good job with her just couldn’t get the gun shyness out of her. I could tell she really wanted it though so I reached out to Easton and he told me not to worry to bring her. That being said within three months I got back a dog that would pass any hunt test. She is with out a doubt the dog that’s wanted at the hunts, doesn’t break sits on a whistle, Cast, And it’s just an all-around A+ retriever. If you have any problems with your dog, having gun shyness even mine at almost 3 years old Easton fix it and more. Highly recommend sending your retrievers to Easton at Smokin Feathers. Definitely do not make the mistake I did. What age is best for starting my dog in obedience/retriever training?
We like to begin training around at around 6 months of age. This allows the puppy to gain confidence and essential socialization before arriving for training. If formal training begins too soon, you run the risk of creating a hesitant and unconfident dog.
I just got an 8-week-old puppy, what should I do to ensure proper socialization before formal training at 6 months of age?
Here is a list of things we like to expose our young dogs to before training begins:
Car, boat, and ATV rides
Walks through the woods
Children
Water
Loud and sudden movements
Boats
Height
Slick surfaces
Decoys
Another emphasis we place on puppies is bringing out prey drive. Here is a list of things we do to achieve this:
Simple land and water retrieves
Exposure to feathers, and dead birds
Exposure to live birds
I have a dog ready to start water work, but it is in the middle of the winter. What should I do?
You need to wait. Retrieving a limit of ducks in a flooded rice field is much different than doing a swim-by in the same temperatures. The risk outweighs the reward. No harm will come from waiting for warmer water temps.
I live in an apartment complex in a crowded city, and I’m worried my neighbors will be hindered by my puppy crate training, I do not have the resources available to socialize the puppy while living here. What should I do?
