However, the girl that signed me up wasn’t clear about installation fees and I had to come up with $200 I wasn’t expecting. Even with the disappointment I would still recommend smart start over other providers.
- SAsabrinA andersonJan 6, 20225.0As much as I am embarrassed to say this, I was required to have an ignition interlock installation following a DUI. McKenzie Mechanics, made this process pain free! It did take about 90 mins or so, and of course I brought my 3 yr old along. Upon entering, the secretary greeted us with a smile, and got me started on my paperwork right away, (Not to mention I was 20 minutes late, and they were still able to do my install). Then, without me even asking, she got out some wooden building blocks and a kid friendly movie on TV for my son! I practiced with the device as long as I wanted in the waiting room (which was empty at the time), However, I would’ve liked that to be a bit more discrete just in case there would have been people in the waiting room….. at least I didn’t have to watch a boring video about it. After the mechanic was done and the system was updated the mechanic gave me 2 bits of info on the device, regarding violations, and in the case of loosing battery power. Since I had no further questions I was free to go and enjoy my new enhanced driving experience…..🙄🙄🙄😫😫😫😫.

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?

How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?

What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
