Smart start is the worst company I ever dealt with! Id leave a no star if possible! The morning i came to get my device installed into my vehicle, i wasted 5 hours that day! They just moved from one shop to another and a regional manager was training the tech how to install the device in my truck for first time! Thats 5 non paid hours that i could of been working making money! Got there at 9am as that was my appointment time. Left at 2 pm! Next month same thing but 4 hours as the shop could not figure out how to recalibrate the device or they were having technical problems! Not my problem! By the way the current shop rogers stereo said they are done with this company and will not be taking in anymore customers. Because obviously smart start really doesn't care about their partners or their customers! Probably why the previous shop doesn't do business with them anymore either! Now about the horrible customer support! Hold times for hours! And to try to get to bottom of something, which you won't, you spend 3 days and countless hours on phone! Nobody knows anything and you get transferred all over the place and get nowhere! Until you give up that week and try again next week! Its like evey question you ask them, they put you on hold and email a manager, then every 10 mins they get back to you with an answer. Why cant i just speak directly with the manager and avoid talking to someone that doesn't know anything! Like i asked multiple times!! Customer support says one thing! Regional manager at my current residing location says something totally different! So you dont know for months at first what your full monthly bill will be or when you need to get your stinking device recalibrated! The state that required my 4 month compliance needed me to get my recalibration done every two months! Yet sc required every month! So i get a recalibration date every month in sc. Yet an email from smart start to come in with a date 2 months out! Not confusing at all right! Like im just trying to be compliant! How can i come get recalibrated in 2 months when my machine is set out 1 month! I'd be locked out! Then my truck wouldn't of been able to be driven and would have to tow truck to the shop! Thats nothing to be played around with! Then be non compliant! I requested a higher up manager in the company to contact me and they tell me to wait 5 business days! Its been 4 months after multiple phones calls to customer service department to have a manager call me to figure all this out!! Nobody ever called me back to this day!! I sent incident report to them about everything going on as informed to do so. The online form you fill out and submit again says get back to me in 5 to 7 days! Guess what! Nobody calls you! Was supposed to be $100 a month for me and a $20 state fee according to the person that signed me up. After signing up I'm paying $160 a month now! First payment was $132. Then every month it was going up like 9 or 10 bucks a month! The receipt i recieved in my email has so many things on it that you cant figure out what the monthly price is as every receipt i received has the device installation price. And multiple recalibration fees on there that dont make no sense! How about just make a simple receipt about your current monthly price! Not the price you paid for when installing and fees on every receipt! Now that I'm done with my 4 month compliance with the state I am dealing with, I'm told there is a $59 closing administrative fee that needs to be paid before I get the device removed! NOBODY TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO GET CHARGED THIS ON TIME OF SIGN UP! As well as the 2 times I was on the phone last week and this week and asked about the process of removing the device no mention about it! Today I just got an email and a text from a no reply back sender that I need to pay this extra fee before my device can be removed! Theft! My overall experience was absolutely horrible! And of course you are just trying to comply to have a valid license. And these guys know it and abuse you best they can! I'd never recommend this company to anyone!

Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Start Ignition Interlock
What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. If any other documents are required, one of our friendly Program Advisors will let you know.
How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start is a NHTSA certified Ignition Interlock provider, so we’re able to meet all of the alcohol monitoring authority’s requirements to ensure that you’re compliant within your state or county.
How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?
You will be asked to bring your Ignition Interlock Device in for regularly scheduled services. Call our knowledgeable Customer Care Center to find out how often your IID will need to be serviced at (800) 831-3299.
What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.
Does the Interlock Device mess up or hurt my vehicle?
No, Smart Start's Ignition Interlock Device (IID) will not hurt your vehicle in any way. Our service technicians are the best in the business and are able to install on all vehicles, even hybrids and electric cars!
How long does it take to install an Ignition Interlock Device?
The time required for an Interlock installation will depend on your type of vehicle but we recommend blocking off at least two hours to make sure you are prepared to not miss any other appointments or work.
Where can I find an Ignition Interlock Device?
It’s easy to find the nearest Smart Start location on Google or on our online service center search tool. Go to the Locations tab on our website and enter your zip code into the search bar.
How do I use an Interlock Device?
Using a Smart Start Ignition Interlock is easy! When prompted, blow into the device for a few seconds until you hear a click that signals the test is complete.
How much does an Ignition Interlock Device cost?
Exact IID prices will vary by state, but you can find our current pricing on our Ignition Interlock Cost page on our website. Our expert Program Advisors are also available to provide you a custom quote and schedule your installation today!
How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
