- THTristan HendonJun 6, 20255.0Okay, so super long review… but very detailed in my opinion for those of you who actually care enough to read my honest thoughts on this place: - Their service was quicker than I thought since I was originally emailed a reminder saying that the expected time to install my interlock would be 2 hours, but I think it only took them 1. - One of the employees explained all the paperwork I was given well enough for me to basically understand how they do things there. - She made sure all my questions were answered. - I know this next part doesn’t really matter, but the room I waited in had some knickknacks that I thought were pretty cool decorations for a front office. - It was also clean in there (I’ve been in a lot of mechanic’s offices that were so unorganized it drove my OCD crazy, so glad that wasn’t the case here) - While I was waiting there, without hesitation one of the mechanics gave me a delicious Rice Krispy treat that I had never tried before since it was a flavor I didn’t even know had existed until that moment, so that was really cool of him to provide me with a snack. Every other mechanic establishment I’ve been too wouldn’t have looked out for their customers like that, that’s for sure. - What sucked was the cost of the interlock installation, but I know that’s not on the company. I understand they have to charge that much, bc how else would they make money to be a business? So I realize that’s not their fault. - The only thing I want to point out was when I arrived, I did have a little bit of trouble figuring out where I was supposed to go since the parking lot there isn’t super spacious due to a lot of other vehicles being parked everywhere else… so I just decided to park mines behind someone’s car there, but was told that it was fine for me to leave my car there. - I can vouch that they stay on top of being in contact with their customers, because their phone had rang while the receptionist had to step out to check on the progress of my car and after telling her that it rang while she was outside she immediately called that person back. Other automotive businesses I’ve been too have employees that would just shrug something like that off, so I’m glad this company isn’t like one of those places. - I’ve had mechanics steal stuff out of my car before (I tend to have a bad habit of leaving valuables out where they can be easily stolen) That day I left my phone right there in the front seat and when I got my keys back, that’s when I remembered that I left my phone in the car. Guess where it was when I got back to the car. Right there in the front seat! So this company gets a bonus shoutout for not having thieves for mechanics like most other places do. 💯 - Another mechanic there walked me through on how to operate the breathalyzer in my car and like the receptionist did with the paperwork I was provided, he explained the instructions to me clear enough to where I was able to comfortably understand what I needed to know about the device. - Like the receptionist, he made sure all my questions were properly answered without any confusion. - He told me to have a good day as I was leaving. That’s everything I feel like was important enough to include in this well thought out review I just spent like an hour on lol (I have no life 🤣) For those that actually had the attention span to read through all that… as you can see, the pros of using this provider GREATLY outweigh any cons they may, but probably don’t have since I didn’t have anything negative happen to me during my experience there. If that doesn’t convince you to use Smart Start as your interlock provider, have fun dealing with all the other companies who won’t give a [CENSORED] about your questions or worries. What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start is a NHTSA certified Ignition Interlock provider, so we’re able to meet all of the alcohol monitoring authority’s requirements to ensure that you’re compliant within your state or county.
How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?
You will be asked to bring your Ignition Interlock Device in for regularly scheduled services. Call our knowledgeable Customer Care Center to find out how often your IID will need to be serviced at (800) 831-3299.
What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
