- JTJay ThomasOct 3, 20171.0Do not get Smart Start Ignition Interlock Device installed at this location. The person who installed my IID installed it wrong. He never went over the client checklist with me so I basically had no idea how the system worked. The way I found out it was installed wrong was my car was asking me to blow with the keys not even in the ignition. I ended up getting a violation, in which was sent to the DMV and they added another month to how long I had to keep the device in my car. When I asked him why it would ask me to blow without keys in the ignition he tried to fix it but didn't do anything. When I questioned him why it would ask me without keys in the device he says "I don't know you have to figure out how it works". There was also a line of people who were there because they had violations. Which shouldn't be happening which leads me to believe their devices were installed wrong. This happened to me twice before I finally went to an actually Smart Start location an hour away and got it re-installed. This is not the only subcontracted place that when working on my device such as a calibration they messed it up which lead to a violation. This company needs to check up on these places to make sure they know what they were doing. ALSO they advertise that it's free installation, but I was charged $150 because they said they had to go under my hood to get it installed. Which they asked me before proceeding mid installation but conveniently didn't tell me before hand.

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
