My experience with Smart Start has been extremely frustrating. I’ve had multiple “tampering” violations even though I’ve stayed completely sober and compliant. A licensed mechanic confirmed that the Smart Start device is draining my car battery, which causes false tampering alerts.
Each of these incidents has cost me reset fees, lawyer fees, secretary of state fees, court time, and temporary license suspensions — all because of a malfunctioning device. I recently called the Smart Start number provided after posting my review and spoke with a representative named Laura, but the call was disconnected and I didn’t receive a follow-up.
This has been stressful, expensive, and unfair for someone who is doing everything right. I’ve filed a formal complaint with the Michigan Attorney General and hope this issue gets serious attention.

After recently having my Smart Start Ignition Interlock removed following three years of use, I want to share what a great experience I had, not only with the device itself (which functioned nearly flawlessly), but especially with the team at Electronics Outlet in Lansing. John Pavlik and his staff consistently provided fast, courteous, and professional service every time I brought my vehicle in for calibration or support.
The Smart Start system was reliable and easy to manage. What truly made the difference, though, was the respectful and efficient way the Electronics Outlet team handled everything.
To anyone going through this process: remember, these folks didn’t do whatever you did to end up needing an interlock device. They’re just here to make sure it works properly and safely. If you show up with a respectful, professional attitude, they’ll meet you with the same. Take some personal accountability, and you’ll find that working with this team can actually be a smooth and even positive experience.
If you’re in the Lansing area and need an ignition interlock system, I highly recommend Smart Start and the outstanding crew at Electronics Outlet.

I had a Smart Start device in my vehicle for almost 9 years, the only good thing of the experience was the customer service support. They were always helpful and polite through the years!
