- DBDeidra BoardwineSep 12, 20251.0The vehicle I've had my interlock device in has been having issues, so I had to break down and buy a new car. I followed the instructions given to set my appointment for transferring my interlock device to my new vehicle. The customer service representative set my appointment time and day for 2 days after I called, which was great because I NEEDED MY CAR. I took the entire day off of work to make it in for my transfer, but when I showed up to North Main Audio for my "scheduled" transfer appointment, they said I wasn't on their schedule at all. The manager at North Main checked the records and saw that the smart start customer service rep didn't submit my appointment until 12am on the day I was supposed be there..... Of course, there was absolutely no availability for my vehicle in their schedule when I arrived, and wouldn't be for 3-4 weeks. So I was left in a bad situation, with no remedy, because of that rep failing to fulfill his duties. I'm a single mom of 2 kids, with a full time job, and a full schedule around those things- I can NOT afford to be without a vehicle, due to someone else's carelessness. Thank God North Main Audio employees were empathetic, and went out of their way to try to help me get in as soon as possible for my installation, which involved one of their techs coming in on his day off. I still have to wait for another week to be able to drive again, but if I left it to Smart start, it would be a month. Whoever is in charge needs to practice better communication and reliability, or whatever it takes to ensure better service for their paying customers... Unless you want to keep collecting review like this. 👎👎👎

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?

How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?

What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
