- AOAlonzo OatesJul 26, 20251.0I went in with a perfectly running vehicle, everything was working. I understand every vehicle is different but 24hrs later, after getting the interlock installed, my vehicle is no longer drivable. First, it was the horn that didn't work. Then after fixing it so that the horn worked...then my A/C no longer was working. I then took it back. After looking it over, I was told everything looked normal. After leaving, I noticed my left turn signal was blinking normal then it would blink fast. I pulled over and now the front turn signal no longer works. And to make matters worse, driving this morning, 24hrs after having the interlock installed, my engine overheated and is not drivable. But I am not upset because I understand mistakes happen.

Than today I needed a removal done or I was going to have to pay for calibration which would be a waste . The service tech took his own time to call around and figure out what it would take to do my removal bc I am from another state , I would recommend this place to anyone and I am very grateful to the friendly, professional service tech at this location!

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?

How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?

What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
