I have never had to use an IID before & as many I have been completely new & unfamiliar with how it works & operates until now & after the 1st 4 tries I aced it! Smart Start was thorough & patient in giving me time to practice & learn making it easy. Much easier than Alcolock’s device, as theirs was much more difficult, the instructor wouldn’t explain thoroughly & give me a reasonable opportunity nor time to practice instead, he wanted me to fill out a form spending an extra $70 to send it off and go to 2 of their physicians to get my lungs and breathing checked which I told him there’s nothing wrong with my lungs nor my breathing. I went to Smart Start and had “0” issues w/their device, Alcolock’s Device was much more complex and more difficult to operate leading to consistent fails which others had also experienced the same issue turning away & going to other providers. I am very happy at this point with Smart Start. They were really quick on everything especially the installation. I was told it would take 2-4 hours & it only took approximately an hour. They were straight forward, to the point, honest, respectful, pleasant speaking and friendly. Great customer service so far, I just got started so we will just have to see how things pan out throughout the program. Ty Smart Start. 🙂

Staff is extremely rude. I do not recommend wasting your time coming here unless absolutely necessary.

Something has to be done about the Fayetteville site. The employees are impossible at times. I understand my mistake in having to deal with the device... no problem. However, the chastising, the difficulty in getting appointments, the attitude... ALL MUST GO. There's a customer service standard in all services. Power should not be wielded at customers. You are a service, not a power!
Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Start Ignition Interlock
What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. If any other documents are required, one of our friendly Program Advisors will let you know.
How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?
Smart Start is a NHTSA certified Ignition Interlock provider, so we’re able to meet all of the alcohol monitoring authority’s requirements to ensure that you’re compliant within your state or county.
How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?
You will be asked to bring your Ignition Interlock Device in for regularly scheduled services. Call our knowledgeable Customer Care Center to find out how often your IID will need to be serviced at (800) 831-3299.
What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.
Does the Interlock Device mess up or hurt my vehicle?
No, Smart Start's Ignition Interlock Device (IID) will not hurt your vehicle in any way. Our service technicians are the best in the business and are able to install on all vehicles, even hybrids and electric cars!
How long does it take to install an Ignition Interlock Device?
The time required for an Interlock installation will depend on your type of vehicle but we recommend blocking off at least two hours to make sure you are prepared to not miss any other appointments or work.
Where can I find an Ignition Interlock Device?
It’s easy to find the nearest Smart Start location on Google or on our online service center search tool. Go to the Locations tab on our website and enter your zip code into the search bar.
How do I use an Interlock Device?
Using a Smart Start Ignition Interlock is easy! When prompted, blow into the device for a few seconds until you hear a click that signals the test is complete.
How much does an Ignition Interlock Device cost?
Exact IID prices will vary by state, but you can find our current pricing on our Ignition Interlock Cost page on our website. Our expert Program Advisors are also available to provide you a custom quote and schedule your installation today!
How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
