Total scam artists, stay far away.
I had to have an IID in my car for three months. I had these guys install it without any issues, but two months in they called me to say they accidentally put the wrong device in my car and I needed to come in and have them switch it out. I checked with the court and they said that those two months would not count toward my time. I had them install the correct device. The device was constantly giving false violations and they said there was nothing they could do about it, even after charging me a monthly fee for "calibration". Finally, I made one of my monthly payments to Smart Start, and the guy named Tyson got angry and said I should have made it to him. He demanded that I show him my BANK STATEMENTS on my phone, and if I didn't show him he would remotely lock the car. This was the last straw and I just had him remove it.
Luckily, I wrote to a judge to tell him what happened and he let me off the hook for the rest of the time with the IID, but I still wasted about $700 with these idiot scammers.

Very unprofessional, guy had canceled my appointment, saying I needed to confirm the appointment. I shouldn’t need to confirm anything when I have 5 emails and text messages reminding me of my appointment, all of which have an option to cancel or reschedule. One email came in 30 minutes before the appointment saying “looking forward to seeing you”. Then he got combative in the parking lot, acting like he wanted to fight. THEN started texting endlessly after I called and complained to the 800 number. Find somewhere else to get this done, they definitely will never touch my truck.

I was given an appointment and then contacted the day before by the installer who said he did not have the necessary tools and that I should probably go someplace else. I was also charged for the service without receiving it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Start Ignition Interlock
What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. If any other documents are required, one of our friendly Program Advisors will let you know.
How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?

How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?
You will be asked to bring your Ignition Interlock Device in for regularly scheduled services. Call our knowledgeable Customer Care Center to find out how often your IID will need to be serviced at (800) 831-3299.
What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.
Does the Interlock Device mess up or hurt my vehicle?
No, Smart Start's Ignition Interlock Device (IID) will not hurt your vehicle in any way. Our service technicians are the best in the business and are able to install on all vehicles, even hybrids and electric cars!
How long does it take to install an Ignition Interlock Device?
The time required for an Interlock installation will depend on your type of vehicle but we recommend blocking off at least two hours to make sure you are prepared to not miss any other appointments or work.
Where can I find an Ignition Interlock Device?
It’s easy to find the nearest Smart Start location on Google or on our online service center search tool. Go to the Locations tab on our website and enter your zip code into the search bar.
How do I use an Interlock Device?
Using a Smart Start Ignition Interlock is easy! When prompted, blow into the device for a few seconds until you hear a click that signals the test is complete.
How much does an Ignition Interlock Device cost?
Exact IID prices will vary by state, but you can find our current pricing on our Ignition Interlock Cost page on our website. Our expert Program Advisors are also available to provide you a custom quote and schedule your installation today!
How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
