I have been through five different auto shops that supposedly do calibration for these units and nobody wants to work with this company any more. And the worst part is nobody ever notifies me that I need to take my car somewhere else the next month. Often I show up to my appointment only to be turned away and frantically have to find whoever is doing calibrations at the moment to do it the same day (or else I get locked out of starting my car and am stranded) . Smart start is never even aware that shops are not supporting their product until they are notified by the customer. Customer service is near impossible to get ahold of and the people trying to do calibrations experience the same lack of support from smart start, so they quit working with them. I am currently sitting for 5 hours getting my Smart Start unit removed an hour from home and getting intoxalok because this shop that’s an hour from my house is not working with smart start any more. I would have to drive 3 hours one way to the nearest shop that’s still servicing these units so instead I am paying hundreds of dollars to have it removed and another brand installed. I was told by the tech here that the smart start rep for the area quit the company and there is nobody to support him. Now I have to deal with reaching customer service at smart start to stop billing me and make sure all my data has been sent to the state. This has easily been the worst experience I’ve ever had as a customer at any company or service provider. This company preys on people who are trying to put their lives back together amd dealing with difficult circumstances already. They make it really easy to sign up so they can make the sale and then you’re stuck with them. I have also heard horror stories from calibration techs about customers who have to wait months after their license suspension is up to get their unit removed because smart start is that difficult to communicate with. I got very lucky that an intoxalok rep helped me navigate this process of getting away from smart start and I really dread what else will happen before I am finally done with this awful predatory company and can move on with my life.

What do I need to bring to my installation?
Bring a photo ID and proof of residence in the form of a document verifying your address. You may also be asked to bring any documents that pertain to your case, depending on the state in which you or your program are located. How do I know if Smart Start's devices are compliant with my program?

How often does my Ignition Interlock Device need to be serviced?

What do I need for removal?
Requirements will differ by state, but generally your state authority must grant removal authorization before you can have your IID removed. You will then need to fill out the Device Removal Request form on our website and upload any official documentation that may be required to authorize the removal.
Do I need an Interlock Device on all of my vehicles?
Some states will require that you have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on all cars registered to you, but most states will just require that whichever vehicle you drive have an IID installed. Check with your state authority to see if you will need an IID installed on all of your cars.

How does an Interlock Device work?
When you blow into your Ignition Interlock Device, you're providing a breath test sample in order to start the vehicle. The device then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), and will either say that you passed, need to retest, or failed. You will be asked to take rolling retests throughout your drive.
What can breathalyzers detect?
Breathalyzers only measure your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC).
Is an Ignition Interlock the same as a breathalyzer?
Ignition Interlock and handheld breathalyzers both test your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), but an Ignition Interlock Device is only installed in vehicles and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.
Can I unplug my Ignition Interlock?
Check with your state authority to see if you are allowed to unplug your Ignition Interlock before doing so.
Can someone else drive my car?
Yes, but whoever is driving the vehicle MUST take a breath test and pass before driving. Any failed test will still be your responsibility.
