- SSScott Sass1 day ago5.0We hired Sergio (SG Electrical) to take over electrical work on a home renovation from a contractor who was not preforming. He was extremely helpful in letting us know what we should do since we weren’t sure what we wanted. He suggested the Lutron system since we wanted to be able to control the lighting when we weren’t home. We are very happy with the job he and his crew did. They showed up on time and were extremely meticulous with everything they did. At some point he asked if we were interested in putting solar on the house. He got us a quote and an engineered a plan to provide power and battery storage for what we needed and also for future plans. His price was fair and after we had the roof replaced we hired him to install the solar system. They were fast and once again super meticulous at every aspect of the job. So Happy we found SG Electrical ! We couldn’t be more happy with all of the projects he’s done! We will use Sergio and his great team again!

Do I need batteries for my solar panel system?
Batteries are generally not required due to the availability of net metering from local utilities. During daylight hours, your home primarily operates on power generated by solar panels before drawing from the grid. At night, electricity is sourced from the grid. Excess power produced during the day is fed back into the grid, earning you credits for nighttime or cloudy day usage. However, if you aim to be entirely off-grid, an inverter and battery storage system would be necessary.
What happens when it is cloudy or raining, or it is night time?
Solar panels can still generate electricity in cloudy conditions, though output may vary based on cloud density. For grid-connected systems with net metering, your home uses solar-generated power when available. During nighttime or heavy rain, you draw from the grid as usual. On sunny days, excess power is fed into the grid, earning you credits for use during low-production periods.
Can my HOA prevent me from installing solar?
In California, homeowners associations (HOAs) cannot prohibit solar installations. The only potential issue might be a request to relocate panels, but this is only permissible if the new location would reduce power production by less than 10%. This scenario is unlikely, as panels are typically positioned for maximum energy output, and relocation would often result in a greater than 10% reduction in power generation.

For purchased systems, the process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks from contract signing to completion, including obtaining necessary permits, finalizing financing, and securing utility approvals. Solar power agreements may require 8 to 12 weeks for the same process. The actual installation is relatively quick, usually completed in 1 to 3 days.
