Well, I guess we don't follow the opinions of the other visitors. We came in on a weeknight for dinner. The entire German Village area is just beautiful and Schmidt's is kind of a trap as it is the only restaurants sitting at the end of the historic cobblestone street. It is old world traditional inside with big pictures of the original family members to greet you. We were whisked to a very cozy little side booth in the back room where the buffet set up resides. And our server very much looking the German part took our orders, as we opted for the regular dinners over the buffet. Everything here is tight and loud. As we waited for our dinners to come out, our server kindly brought us a bowl with some of their sample sausages to try. These were just ok, waay too much salt for our taste. Cup of soup of the day - was actually a bowl of chili. The Hunter schnitzel and the Haus sauerbraten also were very salty and just not well prepared. All in all, not a great meal for us. But, we still loved the German Village area!

A busy, buzzing restaurant in a historic building in historic German village. Very popular with locals which is a good sign for people like us who were just passing thru the area. Easy parking. Our waitress, Lauren V was lovely. Efficient yet very personable. Went over and beyond to get us details of the music playing. Good German food with a hint of American Influence. Good selection of German beers, both draft and bottled. No customer Wi-Fi! Excellent, we chatted as we ate and had a great time. If we’re ever in Cleveland again we’ll be sure to revisit.

I had the sausage truck experience. However, I have long questioned why and how a place can consider themselves to serve authentic food when it comes straight from the can. I am now assured that this food is commercialized German/American food. NOT AT ALL worth the cost when they are serving frozen, canned and processed foods made right here in good ole DuhMerica! But if that’s what you like; head on down they’ll take great care of you!! Zoom in on photo to see canned cabbage.

I’ve been to the trucks several times and had Schmidt’s at the fair, but this was the first time I’d been to the actual restaurant. I have to say it was the most unfriendly environment I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I understand it’s osu game day Saturday and busy, but I was sitting front and center at the bar and purposely ignored by 4 staff members that were circling around my group. Again I understand there’s a wait, but a, “Hey thanks for stopping in, we’ll be with you as soon as possible,” would go a really long way. After being purposely ignored for over 5 minutes, we left. Schmidt’s will be a pass for me next time.

I ate at Schmidt’s this past weekend and I just have to say what a lovely experience it was. From the moment I walked in I was greeted with the brightest smile and a cheerful wave. I felt so very welcomed, like I was visiting old friends. The restaurant was quite busy and we did have to wait about 30 minutes to be seated, but honestly I was impressed it wasn’t longer given how many people were there. When we were seated our waitress was polite, though she didn’t have quite the same warmth as the sweet young lady who greeted us at the door. I understand how hectic things can get, so I don’t hold it against her, but I did feel a little rushed. We decided to try the buffet and oh my, it was wonderful. Everything was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. While we were up there, a young woman was tending to the food, stirring, checking temperatures, and making sure everything was just right. She was such a delight. She took a moment to chat with my great grandson and explained what she was doing and why. She was so patient and kind with him, and when I asked about ingredients because of his many allergies, she answered every question quickly and confidently. That gave me such peace of mind and I truly appreciated it. Thanks to her kindness, I felt comfortable letting my great grandson enjoy the buffet and he absolutely loved it. He’s already talking about when we can go back again. Thank you Schmidt’s for such a wonderful meal and for having such thoughtful, caring staff. People like her make all the difference
