Our house is unique. It's Second Empire with a mansard roof, arches, and intricate window surrounds, built in 1869 by Mead and Taft. When my husband and I bought it, we wanted to be good stewards of its history and did extensive interior restoration, but left the exterior alone. Over the years, the original brick had been covered by stucco and then paint, which we thought we could wait to restore. But English ivy took over, and after pulling it off, we started looking for a contractor.
That was an interesting experience. The ones who even bothered to show up weren’t really enthusiastic about the project, and no one inspired our confidence in their ability to replicate the woodwork. Then we found Ryan Clarkin.
Like our house, Ryan is unique. After meeting with other contractors, meeting him was like a breath of fresh air!
He showed interest in our house, looked carefully, listened well, and saw its problems as a challenge to take on.
He told us he has a master carpenter in his crew, and that he would restore our beautiful house to its former glory.
Before leaving that day, he gave us a workup of the total cost, an amount that we thought was fair.
But by then it was September, so we decided to wait until Spring to schedule the work.
To be honest, we were dreading the process. My husband and I are well into our 70s, and weren’t sure how we would manage the noise and disruption. But Ryan’s crew is considerate and polite; they took great care covering our pond and plants every day, and Dave is a first-rate foreman.
Ryan was accessible and accommodating throughout the process.
When the base color and one of the accents we chose didn’t look right in nature’s reflection, Ryan mixed in pigments by hand until the colors were exactly what we wanted.
When we were concerned that some of the surfaces weren’t smooth enough, he decided to direct his crew to continue working on them until we were completely happy…even though he was leaving for vacation and probably wanted our house finished before he left. A rainy June had set the project back.
Ryan left for vacation, but Dave was there every day, as he had been since day 1.
A few days later, our house was finally finished. Dave took photos to send to Ryan, we said goodbye to Dave and the crew, and my husband and I celebrated.
Later that day, we got a text from Dave: Ryan saw a spot from a photo that didn’t look smooth enough, and he asked Dave to return and re-do it.
My husband and I had to laugh…after all our perfectionism about the finish, it was Ryan, on vacation in Portugal, who decided something wasn’t smooth enough!
So, it was a big, complicated job, made more complicated by April weather in June
But Ryan did everything he said he would do, we got exactly what we wanted, and I don’t believe we would have gotten these results from any other contractor.
