Played late August 2025. Overall rating is about a 3.75.
This is not a $100 course. It’s overpriced. However, the more courses I get out to play in the Indy area, I notice that this is a recurring theme. It seems that the demand is high enough that courses can basically charge whatever they want.
On the course condition: the fairways were still wet at noon on a sunny day. I was very glad to see that they adequately water the course. The greens are very well kept in particular, and they roll insanely fast. Probably close to a 13. The cups were cut really well the day I played, too. These are like PGA major greens. While the greens were fun, there was lots of goose grass on the tee boxes. Having worked in golf course maintenance, I do understand that sand in particular is expensive for golf courses to maintain. And there’s a lot of it here. But $100 is still too high. It seems that inflated golf prices are just part of what we’ve got to live with in the Indy area, I guess.
The things which upset me the most about the price were (1) THE COMPLETE AND TOTAL ABSENCE OF A BALL WASHER and (2) the carts were old and pretty beat up. The parking brakes didn’t work on any of them, and many of the seats were torn up. The lack of a ball washer is a complete joke though, first round in my life where I’ve had to open a new sleeve of balls just because all of my balls got so dirty. For $100 there should be a ball washer on the cart, especially at a course with so much sand.
Now, the course layout was pretty good. Lots of technical lies and well shaped and textured fairways. However, the design of the par 4s and 5s got a little tiring. From the blue tees, 12/14 of the long holes on this course have a bunker left and a bunker right of the fairway right at driver carrying distance. I get it, the course is called “purgatory”, it’s supposed to force you into unnecessary challenges like deciding whether to pump a driver or lay up. It was fun for the first few holes, but after playing through like 10 holes with the exact same feature, it was pretty lame. Other than this design feature, I thought the course was laid out well and pretty happy overall.
This is the first public course I’ve played in the Indy area which has a real deal chipping green. I was going to leave 3 stars, but I’m adding a star back purely for the chipping green. They have like 4 or 5 bunkers to practice out of and 2 approaches, with plenty of thick rough, too. The chipping area was really nice and I’m glad I arrived to my tee time early enough to use it.
My final gripe which I take a star away for - the management of the course. When I called to book the tee time, I got a warning that “tee times are cheaper online and you may be charged more for tee times made over the phone”. It’s a shame that even golf courses are resorting to the same behavior as corporate customer service departments. Is it seriously worth potentially losing customers because you don’t want to take a 30 second tee time phone call?
I will play here again someday - probably later in the season when rates are more reasonable. I would really love to play here on a windy day. It would make the course much more challenging.
