  I recently had an extremely negative experience with the Penske Truck Rental location at Home Depot in Wilmington, NC, during a critical time for my family and me—a Military Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move to Florida. This move was already stressful, and the issues I encountered with this rental added unnecessary danger and frustration. When I initially inspected the car carrier, I noted that one of the tires appeared flat. I reported this to the rental associate, who assured me that the tire was simply low on air. He refilled it and insisted it was good to go. Unfortunately, this was not the case. During our trip, that same tire exploded. The remnants of the tire narrowly missed my wife and child, who were following behind me. This incident could have resulted in a catastrophic accident, and I am deeply concerned about the lack of proper attention to such a critical safety issue. In addition to the tire problem, I experienced several torrential downpours during the trip. When I first used the driver's windshield wiper, it completely dislodged, rendering it inoperable. This forced me to come to a full stop as I was unable to see the road, making driving extremely unsafe in such weather conditions. This defect should have been addressed before the vehicle was rented out, especially considering the importance of a clear line of sight during heavy rain. Lastly, the air vent for the driver was broken and stuck in the closed position. During a 95-degree day, this made the cabin experience extremely uncomfortable and almost unbearable. Proper maintenance of the vehicle's basic functions, such as the air vent, should be a standard expectation for any rental, particularly during a long-distance PCS move. In combination, these issues made my rental experience awful and stressful. While I acknowledge that Penske as a whole may not be to blame, I place the bulk of the responsibility on this particular rental location. The negligence in addressing these safety concerns could have seriously injured me or my family, or worse. I strongly advise anyone considering renting from this location to thoroughly inspect their vehicle and ensure all concerns are adequately addressed before embarking on their journey. This experience has highlighted the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, especially during a significant and stressful move like a Military PCS.
