My rating is based upon how pleased I am with the final result produced by Jared Gastineau and Mile high Muscle whom I entrusted to bring my 1959 Corvette back to life. I purchased the car in Roswell, GA in 1976 – so I’ve actually had the car longer than my very patient wife whom I married in 1978. I thought the car was old when I bought it, but at least you would still see C-1 Vettes advertised in the local paper and even see them on the road as daily drivers – which is what my car was until 1982 when I decided I would try to “restore” the car on my own. I got as far as rebuilding the 283 engine and taking half of the paint off, but kids, a move to Colorado in 1983 to further my career, and other expenses were all the excuses that stalled my dream of driving that car again. Over the years I had a not so good paint job done, replaced the 3-speed transmission with a Borg-Warner 4-speed of appropriate date, replaced the chrome reverse wheels that came with the car with stock wheels and hub caps, had the seats and carpets replaced, replaced the dash myself. and got a hard top for the car with the thought that eventually it would be a stock 1959 Corvette. A few years ago I finally realized that I wasn’t going to live forever and that I had worked long enough and hard enough to have someone who really knew what they were doing work on the car. A friend I trusted referred me to Jared. He and I met a few times and talked about the car and what I was looking for. I told him I did not like the fact it drove like a 1950’s station wagon. I wanted to “enjoy” driving the car. I think he had a much better idea where we should go than I did. He proposed that we change the front end to rack and pinion steering and go with 4-wheel disc brakes. He also thought I would be happier with a modern fuel injection unit, power steering, power brakes – and air-conditioning. He presented me with a detailed list of the work he would do and the cost to do the job which I judged to be reasonable based upon my past experiences. What I didn’t realize initially is that he was basically going to do a frame off restoration. Shortly after he trailered the car to his business in Delta, CO the frame was powder coated and over the next few years he slowly reconstructed the entire car – basically everything was replaced except for the drivetrain. Once I realized that the frame was going to be off the body, it became obvious to me that I was going to have to spend more money than I initially figured to in order to repair the fiberglass and get the paint job the car deserved – then of couse, the chrome had to be redone to match the paint job. Having a car restored is not for the faint of heart. There will be expenses that arise in order to “make the car better.” At this point I am glad I decided to spend the money and there are no regrets.. The other thing I should mention is that Jared is a perfectionist and perfect takes time. I think if you are looking for a limited restoration you can expect him to get the job done in a reasonable period of time though it may not be exactly when he promises. IF it is a frame-off restomod, then it is going to take a while, but it will be worth it.
