Typically I shop online, but I visited this store two weeks ago since I was in the area and wanted to buy a new pair of jeans. When I asked the girl if they had any more size 25’s, she looked me up and down before saying anything - as if to question my size. She was hesitant while handing them off to me and just walked away when I said thank you. It was uncomfortable and embarrassing. I was even wearing my favorite pair of Madewell jeans - in Madewell! Like that’s a tell tale sign that I obviously know my size. I went home, put them on and they fit perfectly. But her passive judgement made me feel nervous about trying them on when I got home. Last time I checked we are living in 2021 and body shaming / bullying isn't “cool” anymore. The whole “mean girl attitude” is kind of, I don’t know, dead? But all the Madewell girls had one of those mean girl attitudes that makes you feel unwelcome. I felt like I was in high school again. This entire experience, from the moment I walked in to the moment I left, made me question why I’m spending $128 on jeans, or giving thousands of dollars a year to Madewell if I’m treated like this whole shopping at their stores. As a conscious consumer, it feels wrong to continue to do so. Until Madewell starts hiring kind, accepting and body-positive employees, I’ll be shopping elsewhere.
