Great experience! Shawn is an expert teacher who genuinely cares about his students. He takes the time to ensure they truly understand the material, rather than rushing them through an assembly-line approach.

Lone Star Karate & Self Defense has been our home for the last 16 years! We have had 3 kiddos enrolled in their program with one graduating out with his black belt! The program for kids is great, but they also have classes for adults that extend beyond karate/self defense, so be sure to ask about those. Highly recommend!!

Caroline and Shawn have a gift for teaching karate in a way that’s both fun and incredibly effective. They know how to channel kids’ energy into focus, confidence, and skill—both mentally and physically. If your child needs a little structure (or just a fun reason to put their tablet down), this is the place!

Our karate teacher is truly exceptional. She’s incredibly kind and loving, but also knows how to challenge the kids and push them to do their best—without ever babying them. Her intelligence really shines through in the way she teaches, and she brings a fun, nerdy energy that makes every class engaging. She’s talented, thoughtful, and genuinely cares about her students’ growth, both on and off the mat. We feel very lucky to have her!

Frequently Asked Questions About Lone Star Karate & Self Defense

My child is excited to start, but they’ve quit other activities in the past. How can we help them stick with martial arts?

The key is consistency and parental support. When parents commit to bringing their child to class once or twice a week, it builds a routine that helps the child stay engaged and motivated. With regular attendance, kids naturally progress in their martial arts journey—and with time, they gain the confidence and skills needed to achieve the powerful goal of earning a black belt.

Is martial arts good exercise if my child needs to lose weight?

Yes! Martial arts offers an incredible full-body workout. Combined with a balanced diet, regular training can greatly improve your child’s physical health. More importantly, as they feel stronger and more capable, they’ll also develop confidence and self-esteem—skills that benefit them far beyond the dojo.
