- DBDavid BoeJul 14, 20253.0The convenience is almost unbeatable, but $20+ for three keys? Really? They have something of a monopoly here. I don’t actually know where else to go to get it done. So I paid about 3-4 times what I would have paid in the olden days and complained about it online. If I wasn’t in a hurry I would comparison shop to see if I could do it for way less money, because this feels like a rip-off. One quarter this price seems fair. This pricing feels like they’re taking advantage of their apparent monopoly status. Also, the machine in slow. I didn’t time it, but it seemed to take about 10 minutes to do three identical keys. Maybe it’s my imagination, but again, in the olden days, when you went to a locksmith, he could do three keys in under two minutes. So bottom line: It’s super convenient and the keys work fine. But you pay a very substantial premium of 3-4x the cost elsewhere, and it takes a few more minutes than it should, during which time they video display tries to sell you a variety of other services. I was so dismayed by the exorbitant cost that I couldn’t wait to leave. Next time I’ll try to plan ahead better and find someplace cheaper. Had I known the price ahead of time I might have looked elsewhere. It’s frustrating: by the time you put in the key and get the cost you’ve already burned so much time that you might as well just pay and be done with it. And no doubt that’s what they’re counting on. It’s a solid business model and the machine probably makes a lot of money. But a business model that is based on deception and inflated prices feels wrong. Maybe I’m wrong and unaware of all the costs associated with running such an operation. But $20+ for 3 simple keys feels terribly unfair. Yet I will likely go back. I don’t know where else to go. Damn.
