Kendra is the best agent I have worked with. She is always 100% behind what *we* need and not what other people think we need. She goes above and beyond to get us the right coverage and is there when things have gone wrong, helping us get back to normal. I recommend her without hesitation to everyone I know!

How does my retirement system work?
State teacher retirement systems may change often and can be written in jargon. Agents hold workshops to explain the current system and any changes. They can answer questions about how to set and achieve retirement income goals.
Why would you work on health insurance if you don't sell it?
Horace Mann doesn't sell health insurance, but we know how important it is to our clientele. We work on flexible benefit programs (Section 125) to give educators additional health benefit and dependent care assistance.
What do I get out of attending the State Teachers' Retirement Workshops at my school?
An STRS workshop can help you Manage a retirement plan, Understand the options that are available within a particular plan, and Learn about any recent updates to your state’s retirement system.

What is a traditional IRA?
A traditional IRA is a type of retirement plan that allows earnings to grow tax-deferred and the possibility of tax-deductible contributions. Tax-deductible payments have eligibility requirements based on income, filing status and participation in other retirement plans. You don't pay income taxes on tax-deductible IRA contributions or any earnings until you withdraw money, which is usually at retirement. Similar to other retirement plans, IRAs have annual contribution limits. The annual contribution limits for IRAs are significantly lower than 403(b) or 457(b) plans. Your total payments to Roth and traditional IRAs may not exceed the limit established by the IRS for that year.
What is a Roth IRA?
A Roth IRA is a type of IRA where earnings are tax-deferred and contributions are not tax-deductible. In addition, if certain conditions are met, the earnings will be tax-free. To establish a Roth IRA, you must meet income eligibility requirements. Roth IRAs have annual contribution limits that are the same as traditional IRAs and can be further limited if payments are also made to a traditional IRA. Your total payments to Roth and traditional IRAs may not exceed the limit established by the IRS for that year.
What is a 457(b) Plan?
A 457(b) plan is a retirement plan available to employees of state and local government agencies and entities tax-exempt under section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. Employees can make contributions to a 457(b) plan through pre-tax salary reduction. Contributions and investment earnings in a 457(b) plan are tax-deferred until distributed, presumably at retirement, at which time they are taxed as ordinary income. A 457(b) plan may also offer a designated Roth account. Contributions to a Roth account are taxed currently and if certain conditions are met, earnings will be taken tax-free when distributed. The Internal Revenue Code allows funds for 457(b) plans to be invested in annuities and mutual fund custodial accounts.
What are the benefits of a 457(b) Plan?
With a 457(b) plan your contributions are made through payroll reduction reduce your current taxable income (except Roth contributions). You'll have higher annual contribution limits than Individual Retirement Accounts(IRAs). Income taxes are deferred until withdrawal at retirement and it creates a disciplined approach to retirement planning through regular payroll reduction.
What is a 403(b) Program?
A 403(b) is a retirement plan set up by your employer that allows you to set aside money for retirement on a pre-tax basis through salary reduction. Your premium payments into a 403(b) annuity and any earnings grow tax-deferred until you make a withdrawal, presumably at retirement. While most educators receive a pension from their school upon retirement, the money from a pension typically does not match their salaries. Putting money into a 403(b) before retirement can help offset the difference between your current salary and the amount you receive from a pension.
What are the benefits of a 403(b) plan?
With a 403(b) plan payments are made through payroll reductions reduce your current taxable income. You'll have higher payment limits than Individual Retirement Annuities (IRAs). Income taxes are deferred until withdrawal at retirement and disciplined retirement planning through regular payroll reduction.
