Bret Delfosse has been our plumber for over 5 years. Initially, he efficiently and promptly completed all the plumbing related to an extensive condo renovation which included a wall-mounted toilet. About a year ago he installed a wall-hung, on-demand NAVIEN tankless water heater to replace an old-fashioned warm water storage tank. This freed up much needed floor space in our utility closet and we like its eco-friendliness. However, this upgrade wasn't able to solve that it always took a long time to get warm water in the kitchen (as my kitchen happens to be far removed from the utility closet.) This fall, after having experienced the near-instant warm water from under-cabinet water boilers in my siblings' homes in Europe, I called Bret for advice. He advised these electric boiler units take up considerable cabinet space, are pricey to buy and to install, and inefficient to operate. He explained that our tankless water heater already has a built-in circulation pump and that by installing a small sensor under my kitchen sink, he could create a demand recirculating system. Now, every 30 minutes, the on-demand water heater turns on, and the cooled water that's been sitting in the hot water line gets pushed it into the cold water line until the sensor indicates there's hot water right underneath the kitchen sink. Yay! No more turning on the hot water faucet and letting the water run (for what seemed like forever) until it gets warm, and the cooled down water is used as "cold water" when I open the cold water faucet. I like that I am saving water and even more so the benefit and convenience of instant warm water in the kitchen. Thanks Bret, for this great advice.
