Herman Landscape Service Inc was founded in 1943 by Robert L. Herman. While attending the University of Wisconsin, Bob took a job as a driver for William “Bill” McKay. He was soon selling and planting McKay Nursery stock. In 1944, he graduated from the UW with a degree in Landscape Architecture. What started out as a local one-man operation has grown into service oriented corporation serving Madison, Dane County, and southern Wisconsin. Bob retired in 1975 leaving the family business in the good hands of three sons, a daughter, a son-in-law, and many of his trusted and experienced employees. In 2007 Mr. Herman was inducted posthumously into the Wisconsin Green Industry Federation Hall of Fame. Today the third generation is making a strong appearance in the business carrying on the love of nature and making beautiful outdoor living spaces.

- MMMattAug 19, 20205.0We recently hired Herman Landscape Services to rebuild an improperly built retaining wall (by a different company) and couldn't have been more pleased with the process and end result. I contacted them via email and Elizabeth responded in a timely fashion to get an estimate scheduled. Jeff showed up right on time to take a look at the project and I was emailed a quote within a week. We had to get the rebuild done correctly this time so I had a few questions as to how the wall would be built and Elizabeth answered them all completely and in a timely fashion. When we decided to hire them, I had a contract in hand a couple days later. After returning the signed contract and deposit, Elizabeth let me know they received it and our project was scheduled to be completed in about a month or so. A couple weeks later I got an email saying that they will be at our property in a couple days to do the work (a couple weeks early). Brian (foreman) and Dave showed up on time on the day of the project. Brian looked over the project with me for a few minutes to confirm what will be done and they went to work. They completely dissembled the wall, chiseled and grinded the existing stones to fit much tighter, rebuilt the wall, added stone/drainage behind the wall, and reseeded and strawed the area that was damaged by the bobcat. Attached are the before (with green grass) and after (straw). From the very beginning to the end the process was great. I really appreciated Elizabeth's timely and informative responses, Jeff showing up as scheduled for the estimate, and the great work Brian and Dave did on the wall! As they were leaving, I asked them to quote out two more projects and look forward to working with them again in the future.
