Hayes Valley Inn offers budget-conscious travelers a cozy stay in the heart of San Francisco’s vibrant Hayes Valley. Set across three historic buildings, our 64 rooms blend charm and practicality, with options for both short-term hotel stays and extended stays.
Guests enjoy access to communal kitchens, seamless self check-in, and 24/7 text support—all just steps from top dining, shopping, and cultural attractions.
This hotel advertised a communal kitchen Not communal bathrooms And showers. This hotel is also NOT ADA/HANDICAP friendly. There are no elevators in the hotel and very modest handrails. As a new knee replacement recipient lugging luggage up and down stairs was not conducive to my needs. They need to be more clear on the amenities and limitations of this hotel.

The room had a very strange smell. It wasn’t possible to open the window but even so there was a loud fan outside. There was a connecting door to the room next door, which allowed every noise from the guests next door to come through, even just their simple movements. I asked to switch but they were full. The shared bathroom was old and a bit gross.
Guests seemed to sit on a chair that was right outside my room at night which was a bit odd. The area is okay, it’s centrally located and has some bustling restaurants but I explored nicer ones and it’s a bit close to some more sketchy parts. I would say you get what you pay for but I paid too much for this stay. Definitely bring earplugs. Very glad I did.
The housekeepers work hard but were knocking on the door at 8:30am which seemed a bit early, especially when I was due to check out anyway at 11am.

At one time, I wouldn't have considered staying in a hotel with shared bathrooms and showers but I've changed my mind. Everything here is spotless and clean-smelling! The price is half of what you'd pay for a similar room elsewhere in S.F.
I've never had to wait to get into the bathrooms or shower, in fact, I rarely see other guests.
Another standout is the bright, beautiful kitchen. It's at the corner of the building and it's flooded with morning light. There is a full size refrigerator and microwave there.
Here is what truly makes this place special: the neighborhood outside the door. Hayes Valley is one of the livliest parts of the city. There are probably at least 20 unique restaurants within a five minute walk. There are interesting shops all around, a laundromat nearby and Trader Joe's grocery store is within easy walking distance. It's really feels like you're in the center of all the action. Public transit is good.
A unique thing about this inn is that there is no front desk. Everything is done on the Internet or the phone. Even the room key is stored on your phone. Make sure you keep it charged!
Make sure the inn has your cell phone number and that you have the code to open the front door.
There are two (slight) negatives I should mention: outdoor noise can be loud sometimes. There are sidewalk cafes right outside the inn. The good news there is that these places aren't open late. They close at 10:00 or 11:00 pm.
Second (slight) negative: There is no elevator. This could be an issue for some visitors. If noise is an issue, the higher up you go, the quieter it is.
Just thought of something else to mention: I've stayed here twice in two different rooms. The first room had a TV with hundreds of cable channels. The second had only 10-15 basic broadcast channels. If you like watching TV (or if you're traveling with kids), request a room with cable TV.
Whew, hope this helps!
(P.S. Be sure to visit the nearby "Patricia’s Green In Hayes Valley Park." Get a coffee or juice, sit and people watch!)
