About

Thrift Store
The vision of our 501(c3) nonprofit organization is that ALL people have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential through the power of work.Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee is based in Nashville, Tenn. The agency serves 48 counties throughout Middle and West Tennessee, operating 30 retail stores and two outlet stores, about 53 Donation Express Centers and 13 Career Solutions Centers. The nonprofit is one of Tennessee’s largest employers of people with disabilities with more than 45 percent of our workforce reporting some type of disability or disadvantage. Although affiliated with Goodwill Industries International in Rockville, Md., we operate independently through our own governing board of directors. Goodwill accepts gently-used items that donors no longer want, need or use. Those items are sold either in our retail stores or online at onlinegoodwill.com. Revenue from the sale of donated goods helps fund job training services and programs provided by Goodwill Career Solutions. In addition to retail sales, Goodwill depends on several other revenue sources, including state and local grants.

Quote "the Goodwill mission statement often includes returning to the local community by strengthening communities and reinvesting in them through various programs, although the phrasing can vary by region. Reinvesting in the community: The organization's programs and services, funded by the sale of donated goods, are directly intended to benefit the local area...While Goodwill is an international organization, the way it operates locally is through its regional chapters, which are focused on meeting the needs of their specific communities." The above is part of the Goodwill Industries Statement. Officially all Goodwill stores are supposed to sell locally donated items in the local store to the community. However it is policy to list the "good" stuff on eBay or other online places. So the official stated mission is to return to the local community by selling locally donated items back to the same community. However in reality they list the best items on eBay. This is of course deceptive and a lie to the public about the good they supposedly do for local communities.

I don't usually shop at Goodwill because I'd rather my money go to a local thrift store then a man who makes millions. I am low on money and stopped by the Goodwill - Cookeville location yesterday to see if they had some dress pants and shoes for my son's homecoming dance. We found a pair. I took them home and washed them. My son put them in the dryer and they shrank. I tried to switch them out for a bigger size. I had the receipt and they refused because I had thrown away the tag. At Walmart or any place like that all you need is the receipt. I will now NEVER shop there or any Goodwill store. They do their employees dirty. They don't pay them enough and the high up people rip off customers and take that money! Don't let them fool you! SHOP LOCAL!!!!

I’m not sure what has happened with the staff and management team at this Goodwill location, but the overall tone/attitude of the workers has become very rude to the customers. I have been going to this Goodwill from childhood and the workers used to be a joy to go in and see. Now the new workers act like you’re in THEIR way simply by being a shopper. I was wanting to look at a clothing rack that had just been taken out from the back. I’ve been to multiple different Goodwills and this was never an issue for me and most workers are super chill about it, but not at the Cookeville location! I stopped to look at a rack and the employee seemed to be obviously blocking me. Once he stepped away I started looking at the rack. He comes back and stands facing me and stares at me. I told him I just wanted to look at a jacket that caught my eyes and in a rude tone he replied, “just put it back when you’re done.” I understand that these employees have probably been told to keep things organized in the store judging by their color organized shoe display… but come on, it’s Goodwill. I would say that most thrifters miss the days where we can actually dig through items to find a treasure and not have everything be perfectly organized. Not to mention their “new arrival” items where all of the name brand stuff goes that they look up on eBay. I know this is a thing all Goodwills are doing now, but it’s really disappointing that you can no longer happen across something good. Instead the employees organize or keep all of the desirable items in the back for the corporation to become more rich. The fun thrifting days are over.

Some of the younger ones who work in clothing are quite rude. They block your access to look knowing your waiting. The guys who come out to get your donations... I greet them, I hand them my stuff, I say thank you, and they say absolutely nothing in return. They look and act like they hate their job! Therefore, I will not give to job training anymore. If they cannot train their workers to smile, be friendly and show customers a little respect, then my donations are a waste! Also, trying to get around in the back room is next to impossible because its always a mess. They just haphazardly put things in there without leaving room for people to get around and pass each other. I added to my review due to the fact nothing has changed. Not sure management got around to looking into it or just don't care
