I want to share an experience I had at your store that left me feeling disrespected and possibly discriminated against. While checking out, the cashier treated me with a noticeably cold and dismissive attitude. Right after me, she helped another customer—who was of the same race as her—and the difference in her tone and friendliness was immediate and obvious. I couldn’t help but feel that race may have been a factor in how we were treated.
I was purchasing more items than the customer after me—not that that should determine how anyone is treated, but it made the contrast in service even more striking. When I asked the cashier why we weren’t treated the same way, only then did her tone change. It felt performative at that point.
Before I left, I asked for her name, and she told me it was Debby. I want to be clear that I didn’t receive this information freely—I had to ask for it, because the experience left me feeling so uncomfortable that I felt it necessary to document what happened.
I chose not to return the items I purchased only because I had already invested a good amount of time shopping, and that time mattered to me. Still, the way I was treated stayed with me—and that’s why I’m bringing this to your attention.
Everyone deserves to be treated with equal respect and dignity, regardless of race. I hope you take this seriously and look into how customer service is being handled at this store.
