This was my first time visiting a Doc Martens store, and my experience was very mixed.
When I arrived, I approached two male employees who were standing together talking and laughing. One of them offered to help after I explained that I have very wide feet due to a medical issue, but that I also walk long distances and wasn’t sure which style would suit me best. He told me to try a size 9 and 10 and suggested I look at shoes with more of a heel near the entrance. While I was browsing, I overheard him tell a colleague that he thought I was “rude”—which was surprising, since all I did was ask for help.
After that, he went out of his way to assist other customers, ring up purchases, and chat with colleagues, while I waited for about 10 minutes. Eventually, when I tried to get help from another associate, he scoffed to a coworker about how many pairs I wanted to try on—despite it being his own suggestion. His lack of professionalism and attentiveness was extremely disappointing.
The saving grace of my visit was the two women working that day. One of them eventually helped me, and the difference was night and day. She was knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely cared about finding the right fit for me. She explained which pair would work best for my wide feet and long walks, and she was absolutely right—the pair she recommended fit perfectly, while another pair she cautioned against was far too slim. She also guided me on how to properly care for the shoes and recommended the right products.
Overall, the women on shift were hardworking, professional, and provided excellent customer service. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the two men, who seemed more interested in chatting with each other than helping customers. I left with a pair of shoes I love, but the poor service from the male staff makes me uncertain if I would return to this location.
