I brought a couple of rings in this week to be looked at. Gold, diamond, and precious stones. At first, he took a look and told me it was all fake. That they weren’t diamonds, and it wasn’t gold. Once he realized I wasn’t just going to pawn off these family heirlooms to him, and that I am a lawyer, he then retracted his analysis (“sorry!”) and determined they WERE diamonds and gold. He tried to gauge my price and when I told him I was first going to multiple people to get it appraised, he advised me NOT to spend any money for a formal appraisal, then offered me $1500 for the ring. I declined, and paid to have a formal appraisal done the next day. The 18k gold, 2.0kt diamond, and 1.5kt sapphire ring was valued at over $8,400.
