I walked into Clayton not knowing how the home buying process worked or even where to start. My goal that day was just to see what Clayton had to offer and get an idea of pricing. Next thing I knew, we found the perfect home that worked for our budget—and Spencer made it happen!
At first, the process seemed complicated, but looking back, it was actually pretty straightforward thanks to the Clayton team’s help. We’ve loved our home so far and haven’t had any issues.
A special shout-out to Deborah—her knowledge of navigating the city’s permit process was invaluable. Honestly, if it hadn’t been for her expertise, I might have walked away because dealing with the city was a nightmare. She made it manageable, and I’m so grateful.
Overall, the team at Clayton of Bristol made the process way easier than I expected—honestly easier than trying to find a rental property. I would definitely consider them again in the future if I ever decide to upgrade to a different home.
Lastly, for those considering buying here (especially if you’ve seen the negative reviews): to make the process easier, find a home that truly fits your needs and budget. Have an idea of where you want to place it. Ask every question you can think of and read all of your documentation carefully so you know exactly what you’re doing, what you’re paying for, and what’s covered or not covered. Going in informed makes all the difference.

I lost my house in hurricane Helene and I was between two places to get a house, Loves and Clayton. I went with Clayton because we really liked the house they showed me, but I asked for one request because I had lost everything in Helene. I asked if he could help me with some furniture. He said, ”yeah we should be able to do that”. So we shook hands and went on to discuss the process for the house. I had to put a $1,000 up front so I did. Then I had to pay another $1,000 down and everything was still going ok. So I went to the next step and asked him how long it would take to build the house and he said, “ it should take 2 weeks”. He said, they try to get people in because they understand what it’s like not being able to have a house. They said they try to get people in quickly, but I don’t call 8 months quickly, and I’m still waiting for them to closed it. About 7 months in they finally got the house down here and they built 2 porches and I had to build the last one out of my own money. Then they finally came down about 2 weeks after that to go through the house. We went through the house and the lady took a few pictures immediately that needed to be fixed. Also through the walk through the water wasn’t working and we didn’t know why so she said she would get somebody to come down here to fix it, but I never heard anything from anybody about that anymore. So I went over there first, and told them again about the water and they said I need to talk to the person that sold the house to me, which wasn’t there that day. So I went back home and called about 2 days later to the person that sold me the house and told them about the water and they said they didn’t know anything about it. Then they said let me get off of here and I’ll call you right back, which he did this time. Then I asked him about the tank alarm for the septic system and he said let me get of here and I will try to call you back again, but this time he didn’t call me back. So I went up there about 2 days after that and talked to him and he said the contract didn’t cover it, that I would have to deal with it myself. I mentioned this alarm to him several times, but he said, “oh I don’t remember that “. It was like he suddenly got amnesia over a lot of things then, first it was the tank alarm and then it was the furniture. It was about 3 times I mentioned to him about the furniture to and the last I talked to him about the furniture I told him what I needed; a couch, a kitchen table, a coffee table, and 2 end tables. Then it was never mentioned again, then my mom went over there about it and they told her they didn’t have any furniture. I feel like I got done wrong in so many ways. I had to fix the water by myself, I got stuck with a high bill and no furniture, and I have to fix the tank alarm myself. I put my trust in Clayton and they failed me.

They did my dad very dirty. My dad was a hurricane Helene victim. He lost about everything, his house, everything in his house, and his brand new storage building. So naturally he had to get a house. He went to Clayton and the deal they made was a little over his budget, but they worked something out that if he worked with Clayton and raised his budget a little higher they would help him with some furniture. All he needed would be a couch, a kitchen table, a living room coffee table and two end tables. At the minimum a couch and kitchen table, they agreed and said, “yeah we should be able to work something out on that”, they even shook on it, and a hand shake means a lot to me; It means that y'all respect and trust each other, but they went back on their word and told my dad they don’t remember making any such agreements to him about that. My dad even said he saw the persons face turn bright red when he said that which is an obvious indication of lying. My dad even reminded them time after time through the process of that agreement they made and they said yeah of coarse we got you, they even told him, “what do you need so that I can write it down and be looking for you.” Then when the time came they handed him the keys and he went in and there was still no furniture. So he went back up there to talk to the people and they denied everything saying, “I don’t know what you are talking about”, making him look like a crazy person. My grandma even went up there to them and they denied everything again. Not to mention that they said they could get people in their house in 90 days, it took 8 months for them to be able to live in it and they are still not done with it! Then there was the tank alert box for the septic system. They didn’t tell him anything about it so he took it upon himself and asked them if he needed to get the box out, which he would have done, or were they going to get it out. Crickets, they never answered him back. He even left the door open for them to get it out. Now they are saying it was his fault and that he should have removed it, but he asked if he should remove it and they didn’t tell him anything. Now they are saying it wasn’t in the contract and he will have to pay for it. He was lied to just to make a sale and that is not only unethical, but that breaches trust between a business and its customers. I wish I would have been there so that they couldn’t have took advantage of my dad! All I will say is that God has the final say.
