Buyer Beware – especially seniors
I felt confident in choosing Budget Blinds SE because of their excellent reviews; however, I have been bitterly disappointed. In spite of all the research I did, I found out right after installation, that I can hardly raise my $3,500. Solar shades because of the safety guards on the chains. These are required by Health Canada. It takes 17(!) very hard pulls to get just one shade all the way up.
When I complained to Budget Blinds’ owner, he told me that it was the law and that there was nothing he could do. He also told me that the sales rep had explained all my options and that I had chosen the manual chains – instead of the motorized option. In fairness, the sales rep did ask me which option I wanted; however, she did not warn me that I might have a very hard time given the size of my window = 7 ft. high.
In pursuing this with Health Canada, I found out that these changes have been in the works since 2019. They have included discussions with the industry, and other stakeholders, prior to the regulations being changed a couple of years ago. I believe that Budget Blinds (as “experts” in their business) was negligent in not ensuring that I was fully aware of the consequences of my choice. As a former business owner, myself, I made sure that my customers understood exactly what they were getting and how things were going to work – so that there were no unpleasant surprises for them. I would have appreciated the same courtesy from this vendor.
N.B. Although this review is specific to Budget Blinds SE, I would caution anyone buying window coverings from any other vendor to make sure they know what to expect. Reddit is full of threads of people who have also been unpleasantly surprised.
Oct 19, 2025 - I want to respond to the owner's remarks about the blackout curtains issue. I told the sales rep I wanted blackout curtains for the bedroom. She gave me samples to look at and told me "none are 100% blackout". I assumed she meant around the top/bottom/edges. When I looked at the contract, I saw it said, "room darkening". I didn't question it because I trusted the sales rep had given me blackout samples: I figured " room darkening" is just what her company called them -otherwise, why would she have given me samples to look at that weren't what I had specified?
As I said, "Buyer beware. Check, check and check again because you can't trust this company to look after you.
Their installer, Leanna, was terrific.
