  I traveled to the area last week and noticed a checkmatt BJJ right nearby our AirBnb in Murrieta. I popped in and they told me about open mat the next day at the Temecula location. I had an amazing experience dropping in for open mat. Helio (the owner) was super welcoming from the get-go and got me into a loaner gi (I didn't bring mine b/c I didn't think I'd be lucky enough to train on the family vacation!). Everyone was wicked respectful and rolled hard. It was just like being back home in MA (minus the 100 degree day.) I can't wait to visit again the next time I am in Cali, and for anyone looking to check out a high quality academy I would defintely recommend the squad at checkmat. Oss!

  Great gym, amazing coaches and professors. Very respectful members and training partners. Highly recommended for someone new to the sport or even for higher belts looking to improve or prep for competitions. Very flexible schedules for all levels of classes and availability for privates for those looking to prep for competitions.

  I've been going to Checkmat for 2 and a half years and it has boosted my self esteem and confidence more than anything else has. I've done other martial arts and nothing has compared to the self defense skills of BJJ. I went only to private classes for the longest time with Helio and Larissa, both extremely patient, humble, and caring. Now I do the women's classes and my husband is trying Muay Thai classes there too. It's making me sweat and work certain muscles to fatigue, and I love it! If you ever want to compete, there's so much potential you can achieve with these guys. I HIGHLY recommend having your kids put into their classes to help develop their motor skills and be able to defend themselves growing up. Also, my dogs have become their unofficial mascots, so if you ever come when I'm there, you might get to see a furry friend. 🐕

  Checkmat Temecula is hands down one of my favorite places! Not just for my kids or myself but because this whole team has become family! We love Professor Helio, Coach Larissa, Marcus and Frenchy. They are fantastic teachers and just amazing human beings all together. Last June, I moved my older son home from Maui where he started Jiu-Jitsu but sadly quit quickly after starting... I put him, my little one and my nephew into Checkmat's kids classes and they loved it from the first day! They've adapted and bonded so well! Professor Helio has not only represented what a great coach is but has become an important role model as well in my boys' lives. They're learning self defense, self discipline and most importantly, respect. We could not be happier since joining! LOVE LOVE LOVE Checkmat Temecula
