My sister has been at Azalea Place for about three months now & I can't recall when, if ever, I've seen her as content as she's become there. Having been a resident in a similar group home most of her adult life, 30+ years, that's saying a lot. Azalea Place's house & grounds is well-maintained, & the food is delicious. Beyond those surface qualities, the medical team available to the residents is responsive, & the staff interacts with the residents in a cheerful, sincere way, with none of that sing-song "baby talk" often experienced in similar settings that is so disrespectful of the residents. For the first time in a long time my sister is voluntarily engaging socially & participating in group activities. It's a joy to hear her answer when I ask her what she's done with the day: "Oh, wow, we. . . !" "We" is a wonderful thing! One of my favorite moments so far for my sister & our family was on the day she moved in. The executive director, Marquita, showed my sister all around the facility, introducing her to everyone we met as "the newest member of our family." It's true, & that's a huge gift to my family.
