Great public course. Amazing place to learn how to play and enjoy the sport. Kenny, Rachel, and the Proshop staff are awesome couldn’t be more welcoming! Wish they still had a teaching pro, but there are some nice people at the range that can always give some nice advice.

Nice course, it’s a shame they let the older regulars treat it like their country club. Played here on and off for 15 years not 1 time has a “Marshall” done anything about slow play. Got paired with a family of new golfers who were playing a bit slow they tried their best to keep up. Got stopped by the Marshall and told to pick it up. We did, all is well, managed to stay a hole ahead of the group behind. Got talked to by a Marshall again on 9 after we were a hole and a half ahead. Ridiculous. Talked to the “volunteer” inside and he basically just fed me a bunch of bs about how he didn’t have the whole story etc. Would have some respect for him if he was honest and said yeah my buddies called me sorry you got stopped twice after you picked up the pace.
Second time to Algonkian, and remembered why I haven’t been there since before Covid - the starters. The starter was rude, did not listen to me, and was weird about which golf cart for me to take. He ended up giving me two keys (I gave one back) and continued to lecture me on things he already lectured me on (cart path only, when to have the cart back in, etc). We were on the tee box for our last hole a 5 minutes before we had to have the carts in and he demanded we pick up our bails and pack it up. The cheaper rates than other areas courses are not worth the lackluster experience with the starter’s poor customer service. The time prior to this, I was like others, arriving to the starter station 10 minutes early and was lectured by the starter that I wasn’t early enough.

Unfortunately, the greens were not in the best shape. However, it was due to maintenance - plugging, adding sand, and an inch of rain 2 days prior. Our foursome actually plugged 5 balls on the greens, nearly totally below the surface. We repaired as best we could. They seems to have not been cut very recently. Even downhill putts had to be given extra muscle. But I get it. Maintenance HAS to be done. That aside, I felt the course was in pretty good shape. Play moved along at a respectable pace. Played at Algonkian MANY times over the years, and it never really has disappointed me.

This place sums up “Local Muni” as it is a fine course but nothing special. I’m just gonna keep it short and sweet. Brought my wife out in spring of 2015 and had a pleasant time. Decided to come back with my kids in June. The greens are straight dogwater. An arnold palmer can be purchased for the “cheap” price of 3.50 cents. The range balls were bought of tiktok shop. The pin locations aren’t the best. But it’s a great place to learn how to play the game.
